Summer heat and excessive sweating? How Botox helps with hyperhidrosis
Summer means sun and outdoor activities – but for some, it also brings challenges such as excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis. This problem can be disruptive in everyday life, especially in warm weather, and can impair well-being. Plastic Surgery Zurich We often see patients who long for effective therapies. Dr. med. Sora Linder, Chief Medical Officer, explains how Botox® can be used specifically against excessive sweating.
What is hyperhidrosis and what are its causes?
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which the sweat glands produce significantly more sweat than necessary to regulate body temperature. Unlike "normal sweating" that occurs during heat, exercise, or stress, hyperhidrosis occurs independently of external influences – often suddenly and in everyday situations. Those affected often sweat for no apparent reason, even at rest or in cool weather.
Forms of hyperhidrosis:
- Primary hyperhidrosis: without any identifiable physical cause, usually genetic; often affects armpits, hands, feet or the face
- Secondary hyperhidrosis: as a result of other diseases (e.g. hyperthyroidism, infections or medication side effects)
Even if hyperhidrosis does not pose a direct health threat, it can severely limit quality of life – at work, in social life, and in personal well-being. The good news: With modern methods such as Botox Hyperhidrosis can now be treated effectively and discreetly – without surgery.
“Many affected patients tell us that summer is a test of endurance for them – not because of the heat, but because of the constant sweating.” Dr. Sora Linder, Chief Physician of Plastic Surgery, Zurich
How does Botox treatment work?
The injection of botulinum toxin type A (Botox®) is a proven method for treating excessive sweating. The active ingredient specifically blocks the nerve impulses that activate the sweat glands – without impairing muscle mobility.
The most important things at a glance:
- Onset of effect: usually after 3 – 7 days
- Duration: about 4 to 9 months
- Application areas: armpits, hands, feet, forehead
- Duration of treatment: 15 - 30 minutes
- Social skills: immediately, no downtime
"Many of my patients are surprised at how quickly their sweating reduces after treatment. After the treatment, they can wear light-colored clothing for the first time in years – without fear of stains. Especially before summer, Botox for hyperhidrosis is a highly sought-after and effective solution." Dr. Sora Linder, Chief Physician of Plastic Surgery, Zurich
