The eyes are the focal point of our face and significantly influence how fresh and vibrant we appear to others. Drooping eyelids, pronounced hooded eyelids, or bags under the eyes can make one's gaze appear tired, aged, or the eyelids swollen – even if you feel perfectly healthy. A precise and gentle eyelid lift helps you achieve a natural rejuvenation of the eye area and restores your face's original radiance. Would you like to learn more about the procedure, the healing phase, and valuable aftercare tips? In our blog interview with Professor Hisham Fansa , we have summarized all the important information for you in a clear and concise manner.

What is an eyelid lift?

Eyelid surgery , also known as blepharoplasty, is a minor but effective surgical procedure. Excess skin, muscle, or fat tissue on the upper or lower eyelid is removed or repositioned. The result: a more open, alert look – without unnaturally altering the face.

Professor Fansa, what is the difference between an upper eyelid lift and a lower eyelid lift?

During an upper eyelid lift, we remove excess skin from the upper eyelid to give your eyes a fresher and more open look.
Lower eyelid surgery, on the other hand, usually focuses on harmoniously reshaping the transition between the eye socket and cheekbone. The goal is to effectively eliminate under-eye bags and gently soften the harsh contour of the tear trough. Since very little skin typically needs to be removed from the lower eyelid, the focus here is on naturally reshaping the tissue.

Is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) painful, and what type of anesthesia is used?

Upper eyelid lifts are usually performed under local anesthesia and are not very painful. You might need a mild pain reliever on the day of the surgery, but generally not afterward. For lower eyelid surgery, a short general anesthetic is recommended, and here too, the pain is usually mild. If you are combining the two procedures, we recommend a short general anesthetic.

How long do the results of an eyelid lift last?

The longevity of the results varies from person to person and depends on the natural aging process and the predisposition of the connective tissue. Generally, however, you can expect a long-term effect of 10 to 15 years. looking forward.

Will visible scars remain after eyelid surgery, and when can one resume social activities after the operation?

Scars on the upper eyelid heal quickly; after 10 days, you can usually resume your normal social activities if everything heals well. Swelling on the lower eyelid usually lasts longer, but it can be easily concealed with makeup. Furthermore, the swelling is more noticeable to the person with the scar than to others.

What risks and complications can occur during eyelid surgery?

In the hands of an experienced surgeon, complications are extremely rare. As with any surgical procedure, temporary swelling or minor bruising are normal side effects that subside on their own after a few days. Infections of the wound or conjunctiva are extremely rare. We minimize the risk of temporary drooping of the lower eyelid (ectropion) to an absolute minimum through our precise and tissue-sparing surgical technique.

At what age is eyelid surgery recommended/when is surgery medically advisable?

The right time for surgery is highly personal and depends solely on your individual level of distress: A procedure is advisable if excess skin or under-eye bags bother you in your daily life. Since skin aging is genetically determined, we see patients of all ages in our practice – some feel the need for surgery at 35, others not until 70.

What results can be expected?

It's important to us that your results look completely natural and that your personality remains fully intact. We don't change you, we simply turn back the clock a little. The result is a fresher, more rested look. Look forward to compliments on your vibrant appearance – many friends won't even notice you've had anything done.

How can the healing phase be best supported?

To best support your healing process, we offer special infusions before and after the operation upon request. These strengthen your immune system and promote rapid wound healing.
On the day of the procedure, you should rest completely at home. Close your eyes and relax – podcasts or music are ideal, while you should avoid television, computer use, and reading. Cooling is usually not necessary.
For a safe healing process, it is important that you follow your doctor's instructions precisely and take only the prescribed medication. After the sutures are removed, consistent care of the scar with a cream with a high sun protection factor (SPF 50) is crucial to prevent discoloration.

The right sleeping position after eyelid surgery: Tips for a restful night

For optimal and undisturbed wound healing, you should definitely sleep on your back for the first few days after the procedure. Whether you lie flat or slightly elevate your upper body is a matter of personal comfort – however, a slightly raised pillow can help reduce initial swelling more quickly.
A practical insider tip from our experience: If you unconsciously roll onto your side a lot while sleeping, place a so-called "nursing pillow" snugly to your left and right. This will gently stabilize you and help you effortlessly maintain a safe supine position throughout the night.

Eyelid surgery is a minor procedure with a significant impact: it can restore the natural radiance of tired-looking eyes and contribute to a noticeably fresher feeling. The most important factor for a long-lasting and harmonious result is choosing an experienced specialist who understands your individual anatomy and preserves your natural facial expressions.
