Botulinum toxin for the penis

Botulinum toxin causes the (smooth) muscles surrounding the vessels to relax slightly. This allows more blood to flow to the corpora cavernosa. This makes the penis appear more blood-filled and larger, both in the flaccid and erect states.

There are also studies that use botulinum toxin to reduce premature ejaculation (ejaculatio praecox). Botulinum toxin treatment on the penis can be tried out to see to what extent it is suitable for individual needs. The treatment is a so-called off-label use. This means that botulinum toxin is not approved for this purpose. However, the effects and side effects are the same as when used on other parts of the body. The treatment takes about 20 minutes, and a few injections are made into the corpus cavernosum on both sides using a very, very small needle. This is usually well tolerated and less painful than one would expect. In most cases, the medication and injection are very well tolerated, and there are no restrictions. If a bruise (hematoma) occurs, it may be somewhat painful for the first one or two days, after which sexual function can be resumed. It is important to know that the effect of this type of treatment takes at least 14 to 21 days to become apparent. The effect lasts for about four to six months, after which the treatment can be repeated.

As with any injection, there may be a reaction to the botulinum toxin, but these are very rare. Infections are also a risk, but, as with facial injections, they are very rare after such injections. The injection itself may cause bruising, which is somewhat painful at first; this usually subsides within a few days at the latest. Of course, medical treatment success cannot be guaranteed, as medications can have different effects on different patients. Medication intake, pre-existing vascular disease, or other chronic illnesses can also impair the effectiveness. If treatment for erectile dysfunction is requested, we recommend a urological examination beforehand.
