"Ozempic Face"—a term that has dominated social media in recent months. Images shared thousands of times by celebrities, influencers, and private individuals show striking facial changes and raise a number of questions. In this article, we examine the phenomenon from the perspective of plastic surgery.

What is behind the term "Ozempic Face"?

The term has been appearing more and more frequently in recent months. It refers to a visibly sagging, sometimes sunken face that some people notice after rapid weight loss. This is not a direct side effect of the medication, but a natural bodily reaction: when fat tissue is broken down quickly, the face also loses volume and structure.

It is important to put this objectively: «Ozempic Face» is not a medical diagnosis, but merely describes a possible consequence of rapid weight loss – regardless of its cause.

What to do if your face or body changes after weight loss?

Significant weight loss isn't just noticeable on the scales, but often also in the face. It can appear slimmer overall, familiar proportions change, and fine lines suddenly seem more pronounced. A particularly common feature is a more pronounced nasolabial fold – the area between the cheek, nose, and mouth that tends to deepen more quickly when volume is lost. After successful treatments with GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic or Wegovy, some patients report experiencing precisely this change.

From a plastic surgery perspective, this is a physiological process. How visible these effects are varies greatly from person to person and depends, among other things, on genetic predisposition, biological age, skin quality, and the rate of weight loss.

If these changes are perceived as disturbing or stressful, individual, specialist medical advice may be useful in order to discuss careful and medically sound solutions.

"In younger patients, volume enhancement, for example with hyaluronic acid, or a minor facelift is often sufficient. In older people, however, a more comprehensive procedure may be necessary." Facelift A neck lift can be beneficial if there is significant excess skin or sagging structures. A facelift allows for a natural restoration of facial contours and offers long-lasting results. Prof. Dr. med. Hisham Fansa

Rapid or significant weight loss can be noticeable not only in the face but also on the body. Excess or sagging skin is often visible, particularly in the abdomen, upper arms, or thighs. In certain situations, body contouring treatments can be an option. The goal is to selectively reshape remaining fat deposits and improve skin texture.

Modern methods increasingly enable gentler approaches: In addition to Liposuction Minimally invasive technologies such as radiofrequency energy or helium plasma (Renuvion®) can be used to tighten the skin through the small incisions made during liposuction. If this effect is insufficient, further procedures such as [unclear text] may be considered, depending on the findings. Tummy tuck, Upper arm lift or Thigh lift The question arises. The focus is not solely on aesthetic change, but above all on functional improvement and an increase in quality of life.

We would like to point out that before any aesthetic or body contouring procedure, the body's natural adaptation process should first be observed after reaching a stable weight. Only if patients still feel distressed after this phase will a thorough individual assessment be carried out to define realistic and medically appropriate treatment options.
