In a comprehensive consultation, your current situation, any existing complaints, and your aesthetic wishes will be discussed in detail. The condition of the implants will be assessed, and imaging diagnostics such as ultrasound may be used if necessary. Before the operation, blood-thinning medications should be discontinued after consulting your doctor. If you smoke, we recommend reducing or ideally stopping your consumption a few weeks before the procedure to support wound healing.
The breast implant replacement is performed under general anesthesia and sterile conditions in the operating room of Zollikerberg Hospital. Anesthesia team The hospital's team is always on hand to support us. We often operate through the existing scar to avoid creating additional scars. First, we remove the capsule and the old implant, ideally en bloc. Then, we position the new implant. If medically or aesthetically necessary, the procedure can be combined with a Breast lift Combine. Depending on the complexity, the operation takes approximately one to one and a half hours.
For the first six weeks, wearing a supportive bra is necessary to aid healing and stabilize the implant. The sutures will be removed after approximately two weeks, and the first follow-up appointment will be scheduled; we recommend further check-ups after six and twelve weeks. You should refrain from sports, heavy lifting, and strenuous physical activity for several weeks. The scar should also be protected from direct sunlight for about six months.
As with any surgical procedure, there are general risks such as postoperative bleeding, infection, or impaired wound healing. Specific risks of implant replacement can include recurrent capsular contracture, changes in sensation, or scarring problems. Careful planning, modern surgical techniques, and consistent aftercare significantly reduce these risks. Breast implants cannot remain in the body indefinitely; further replacements are usually necessary. The average lifespan of an implant after breast augmentation is approximately 10 to 15 years. However, if an implant causes neither medical nor aesthetic problems, it can be left in place.
